Death and Dying, the Animal Way
Claudia Dreifus - NYTimes
via youmightfindyourself:
Interesting notion that human death is becoming more disconnected from nature with formaldehyde etc. The idea of death to a lot of people is scary and taboo and people don’t like to face the inevitability of it.
Perhaps that’s why there’s been built such crazy rituals and industries around the whole thing.
It’s strange to think that it’s a thing that no one wants to think about but will have to eventually. Nobody’s immune from death and it’ll come when it comes.
I think a major part of it is the sadness that goes hand in hand with knowing that people you love will never be there again. Nobody wants the sads.
But it comes down to love, that fleeting immutable spike of oxytocin in our brains that give us a sense of belonging. Once someone dies, we won’t get our fix of their love anymore.
Weird to think about.
And forgive me for musing on something so grim and morbid.
